Water North Texas Lawns in Extreme Heat

Summer is here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about lawn care. If you want to keep your lawn healthy and green this summer, it’s important to make sure it’s getting enough water. But how much water does a lawn need? And when is the best time to water?

We are in the dog days of summer where triple digit temperatures are no surprise. And it is no secret that we need to stay hydrated. According to Texas MedClinic’s Chief Operations Officer Dr. David Gude, “Ideally, everyone should make 68 ounces their daily goal for water consumption to avoid dehydration.” Just like people have requirements for how much water they should drink, our lawns also have requirements for how much water they need.

When long periods of extreme heat are combined with low amounts of moisture, it can result in drought stress conditions. Grass blades turn brown, and if conditions continue, it can permanently damage root systems to the point where grass blades are not only brown, but also thin or completely dead. At that point, you’ll have to start from scratch and reseed in the fall. Not only does improper watering affect lawns, but it can also impact other landscape plants and trees.

So how much water does a lawn in North Texas need? One to two inches of water per week is optimal. In order to do that, we recommend watering three to four times per week. Every yard is different, but in order to reach optimal levels, it’s typical to water somewhere between 10 to 35 minutes per zone. To avoid water loss due to evaporation, water before 10:00 am or after 6:00 pm, with the ideal time to water grass in North Texas being just before sunrise. Of course, not everyone wants to get up before the sun to water their lawn, which makes irrigation systems so convenient.

Speaking of irrigation systems, It is important to maintain your system to ensure it is running optimally. Over time, systems usually need maintenance or adjustments. A leak in your irrigation system can waste hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water if not identified and fixed. An irrigation audit can determine if your system is working properly, and pinpoint where it may need attention. If you are interested in an irrigation audit, we can schedule an EnCam technician to come out and ensure your system is working, and watering properly.

One last side note…while lawn irrigation is important, don’t neglect fertilization. Your lawn needs proper nutrient levels, and fertilizer treatments can supplement the nutrients your lawn needs to be healthy, lush, and green.
